Assessment Info and Suggestions
Assessment Instruments and Course Learning Outcomes
It might feel like an extra task, but CLO/ABET SO assessment can (should) be easily incorporated into the assignments and grading you already do.
Select an assessment instrument that corresponds to a CLO associated with an ABET SO assigned to your course (see those here).
An assessment instrument is just a problem from an exam, a quiz, a homework or even an entire assignment (anything you like).
Set a performance standard (score) for the instrument that you believe constitutes student achievement of the CLO.
It is suggested that fundamental/easy task use a score of 90% while a challenging/advanced task should use a standard of 50%. However, this is left up to the instructor's judgement.
The % of students meeting or exceeding the performance standard is the "% of student achievement" reported on the ICOS forms.
There are a few tricky/painful, yet very important items.
We must separate civil engineering (CE) and environmental engineering (EnE) student performance. That means
Therefore, "% CE student achievement" and "% EnE student achievement" must be reported separately.
Examples of CE and EnE student work must be retained from the assessment instruments
One (1) high performance, one (1) average/medium, and one (1) low performance example should be saved.
One set of three for CE majors and one set for EnE majors!
Detailed example of an assessment instrument.
Example Course: CEE 30 - Statics
Example SO: 1 - ability to... solve complex engineering problems by (specifically) "applying principles of engineering" and "...mathematics"
Comments: This is a very detailed breakdown and not every assessment instrument needs to be this detailed. This is provided to show how one might break down the components of an SO and assess them using a single assessment instrument.
If you have an example for any SO please feel free to share it with me and I will post it. Building an assessment instrument library would be very useful!
